Luke 9: 18 “once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “who do the crowds say I am?” they replied, “some say john the Baptist; others say Elijah: and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.” “But what about you?” he asked. “who do you say I am? “ Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”

No one knows me better in this world than my wife and children. Some who hang out with me may think they know me, but not like my immediate family. They know what makes me laugh, what moves my heart, and how much of a comedian I can be with them too.

In the scripture that we are looking at today, Jesus asked a question to the disciples, “Who do the crowds say I am?” Then he asked them a second question, “Who do you say I am?” These two questions are important because it shows how people from different distances view him. To the crowd, he was prophet, good teacher, John the Baptist or even Elijah.  These were all great names and titles that one would be proud of hearing, but none as great as what Peter said he was, “God’s Messiah”, the ‘Chosen One’, the “Christ”!

Who is Jesus to you?  Peter saw Jesus from a different level. As others from a distant named him other names, the revelation that the Holy Spirit gave Peter was only because he was closer to him and walked with him. Who is Jesus to you, or better yet, who do others say you are, and who does your family say you are?  Do people say he or she is a great person, they are Christian!  What about those closest to you? Can they say , “You are a man or woman of God!”

Prayer: Lord, I take this time to ask that you work in us and help us daily as we pursue your presence and who you are in our lives. Make us into the people you have purposed us to be. At the end of the day, what matters most is how you see us, and we need your guidance for this daily. We thank you Lord, in Jesus name, Amen!
