Isaiah 61: 1 “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.”

The prophet Isaiah here is prophetically speaking for the Messiah to come. These are actually the same words that Jesus spoke in Luke 4:16-22 in the synagogue of Nazareth. After Jesus spoke these words, he sat down, and said “today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

If we analyze the text it is very easy to get caught up in how it describes exactly who Jesus is. For He still heals the broken hearted and the damage that sin brings, the poor are blessed by him, and the prisoners are set free.  But none of these could be done if the Spirit of the Lord was not on him to anoint him. This is something that we need to understand today as well. If Jesus who is the son of God, and perfect in both his deity and his humanity needed the Spirit of the Lord, how much more do we!?

Today we too have access to that same Spirit that was upon Jesus that day, and if we hunger and thirst for him, he is willing to come upon you and anoint you for the Glory of God. We are in need of his Spirit to lead us in a time of uncertainty and despair. While the world is looking unto social media for guidance, let us consider how much more we need of God’s Spirit over our lives, so that we can become the people he has called us to be.

Prayer: Father God, we thank you that you give us the opportunity to make request to you, and to share with you our deepest desires. As we meditate on the words of Isaiah 61, we understand the great work your son came to do here so that we too can have access to the same power of your Spirit. Fill us Lord and help us this day amen!
