“Come close to God [with a contrite heart] and He will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; and purify your [unfaithful] hearts, you double-minded [people].” James 4:8

Remember when you had a crush (or maybe you have one now)? You would steal glances at eachother, looking away if they caught your eyes. You’d spend more time finding an outfit, putting extra perfume/cologne on, fixing your hair just right. And if you were lucky they would slowly get closer to you. First with little remarks, then hanging around your friendship group, befriending you until you started talking more and more and it became a relationship. You showed interest, you drew closer and closer to them and they in turn drew closer and closer to you.

With God it’s much the same way. When we first meet Him, we are dirty, smelling bad from our sins with a script about ourselves that has been highlighted, erased, and marked over and over again. But then we start reading the script God wrote for our lives and we begin to change accordingly. We change our thinking, we dress differently, we begin having different friendships because His script begins to be ours. As we draw close to Him, since we don’t have all that weigh of sin on us He draws closer to us. The more we show interest in God, the more He draws close to us until everything we do, think, are is all Him. We begin a relationship with God, walking alongside Him and being one with Him. He calls us His bride.

In the beginning it can be uncertain, but if we stay focused on His word (script) our uncertainty slowly goes away. We can find happiness and acceptance in Him. The same way someone falls in love with our strengths and weaknesses God does as well. Sometimes we complain that God is far but have you ever considered that maybe He’s waiting for you to make the first move?

Prayer: “Lord thank you for drawing close to me. For accepting me as your own. Help me each day to be faithful to You. Amen.”
