Luke 7: 36-39: 36 When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume.38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”

The story of the sinful woman is one of the most amazing in scripture. This woman finds out about Jesus and where he is ,that she barges into the room and begins to wash his feet with her tears. Simon the pharisee doesn’t know that Jesus is aware of who she is, and he begins to wonder if he really is a prophet. Later in the story Jesus reveals that he is very aware and accepts her act of love and forgives her sins.

Although there is so much to point out on this text, let us not forget that Jesus attended the party of the Pharisee. These men had a way of trapping Jesus in discussions, but this didn’t intimidate him. Jesus is a friend of sinners. Whether you are one who’s sin is visible, or you are a religious person, this does not intimidate Jesus and he is always willing to be at our disposal.

Let us be reminded that as he is our friend we can come boldly into his presence with confidence, knowing that he is more than willing to display his grace and mercy over our lives.

Prayer:  Lord, I pray that as we come before you today, that we can boldly cry out to you and that you will cover us with your love. Have mercy on us as we pour our heart to you and allow us to rise up again for your glory. Thank you, Lord, for being such a wonderful friend even during our darkest times in our lives. Amen.
