Exodus 2:11-12,15One day, after Moses had grown up,… he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his kinsfolk. He looked this way and that and seeing no one he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand… Moses fled from Pharoah. He settled in the land of Midian and sat down by a well.”

As you can see, Moses is in big trouble. He flees to Midian before Pharoah finds out what he did. The bible says that Moses fled! He ran away before his own sin exposes him! What do you about the dark things in your life? How do you go about dealing with those attitudes, or that sin that you were very good in controlling, but now it’s coming back to you with vengeance and resurfacing stronger in your life?

Moses settles in a place that was far from public view, and from the most painful parts of his life had occurred. The work that was needed in Moses’ life required time, space and a great deal of privacy!  Although there are many things that can be pointed out and broken down in this story of Moses, the most important thing to draw from this text is that he goes to a place of solitude!

The scriptures go into further detail by telling us that he sat down by a well. A well has also been a metaphor for the soul, or in Moses’ case, it can be seen as indicating his own depths and the depths of God. Without even saying a word, or being even aware of it, this solitude is already doing a good work in him.

I have learned over the years that the primary function of solitude is to settle ourselves in God’s presence. This is not an easy task to do, but the benefits are life changing, and it’s the only way to find ourselves again.

My prayer for this season is that you and I can learn the importance of taking a moment and embrace solitude with God as a way of healing for our souls. What matters the most is that you respond with a yes!

Prayer: "Thank you so much God for reminding us about slowing down and getting away to refocus. May we face those dark areas in our lives, and may your grace and mercy give us the strength to look deep within and learn the actions that need to take place so that we may have the freedom needed for our soul. Amen!"
